The Journey · Are We There Yet?

If you could live anywhere, would you choose where you are right now?

Trish and I asked ourselves that question, and couldn't answer yes with confidence. So we let go of the idea that a house automatically equals home, and set out to find what does.

Empty nesters, on purpose.

We raised and launched eight kids. Somewhere along the way the house got quieter, our work learned to travel, and we started wondering whether the place and routines that fit one season of life still fit the next.

This is our journey, together. Trish's questions and observations are as much a part of it as mine, and you'll find both of us in the writing and on camera.

Why we left Southern Pines

We weren't running from a mistake.

We'd built a good life in North Carolina. It served an important season. We wanted to see what the next one could be.

What changed

  • Our kids were growing into lives of their own.
  • Our work could travel with us.
  • The routines that suited an earlier season had stopped asking anything of us.
What we're exploring

  • More time with family, wherever they've landed.
  • The difference between visiting a place and living in it.
  • Where we might eventually want to land. We don't know yet, and that's the point.

“The questions I bring to my work also show up in our life: what matters now, which assumptions still serve us, and what we're willing to change.”
Brian

Passing through vs. living there.

The summer was family and goodbyes. Since August 9 we've lived in one city at a time, four to six weeks of groceries, neighbors and ordinary Tuesdays.

What it taught us

“We thought living without a permanent home might make the unexpected harder. Cincinnati taught us something different.”
